More than half a year in Korea and I can't believe I only visited the Garden of the Morning Calm recently. No regrets. Spring season is definitely the best time to see this place.
Located in Gapyeong, the ride from Seoul takes around 2-3 hours, depending on which train you ride and the traffic. We rode the subway from Seoul Station to Cheongpyeong Station. From there, you can take the Gapyeong shuttle bus to go to the garden. (The bus schedule is at the end of this post.)
As soon as we entered, we were welcomed by various flowers and I couldn't help but feel like Alice about to explore Wonderland. Besides the bright splash of colors, the garden was designed in a very whimsical way. Paths and flowers ran in curves and circles. Round bushes were everywhere. It certainly feels as if Cheshire Cat's just around the corner!
Other than taking breathtaking photos of the view, you can enjoy the place by having a picnic. A lot of families, couples and kids come to the garden to bond and unwind. The kids loved running around the vast open spaces while their parents lay on the grass and enjoyed the fresh air.
You can also make your own wish towers by simply stacking up 7 (or any odd number) rocks by the stream. Just make sure you don't topple other towers down or you might just have ruined someone else's wishes. :))
PRICE: 8,000 KRW or 8 USD entrance fee
FOOD:
There are at least two restaurants (a vegetarian and a Chinese one) but the food is limited and quite pricey. I suggest bringing some snacks. There's a snack bar just right outside the main entrance.
